Barn owls love abandoned or rarely used barns. This barn owl is sitting in the rafters of a very old ranch building. He is actually behind the shaft of light coming through a hole in the roof. Therefore, he is in the ambiance of the nearby light giving him an other world appearance.
Barn owls are relatively common yet I find them difficult to photograph. As soon as I enter an old, abandoned barn this owl is headed to a door or a hole in a roof. Because of the poor light, I frequently get motion blurs of the wings. This barn owl assumes that I can not see him since he is not in bright light. This photograph cannot be print at large sizes due to the high contrast in the poorly lit rafters of the barn. Most customers find this owl mesmerizing! This owl was voted third place in the Range Magazine Photo Contest. It has been published in ranch-related publications.
