This great egret and I sat through a heavy thunderstorm. Here the male great egret is preening. He is oiling his feather while stripping the water off them. When he is finished, he can fly! Or he can stay in this tree and display to nearby females since he is in his breeding plumage.
Starting in 2000 this image has won almost every contest it has been entered in to. In 2000, this image won the Grand Prize in the International Library of Photography Photo Contest. Same year it won the In Focus Grand Prize Photography Exhibition. Also in 2000, it won hte Dogwood Arts Festival Photo Contest which led to a one-person show At Susan Key Fine Art Gallery. In 2001 Nature's Ballet won 3rd place (First and second place were honorary to Board members) in the New Mexico State Fair Photo Contest. In addition in this contest, it won Judge's Choice and People's Choice. The Palm Beach Photographic Center selected this image for its Gallery Opening and Awards Ceremony. At the Regional Professional Photographers Association(PPA), it won "Distinguished Entry" and was voted the "Perfect" wildlife photograph. These are the highlight awards for this photograph!
