Seeing wolves is always a special event in the wild. I had been skiing but decided decided to look for wildlife usually present on the Idaho side of the Tetons. I suspect that we were able to see them due to the unusual weather conditions.
The weather changed from 20 below to +40 in a few hours as a front passed. These conditions created heavy fog that you could not see through The trees and bushes were still 20 below so thick rime was forming on everything. There was dead silence in the woods. There would be no photography! We waited. Out of the woods, a couple of wolves were cautiously approaching. They clearly could not get our smell with the thick fog and no wind. I did not get a lot of photographs due to shooting with film but I was able to capture their behavior. I had not expected seeing wolves on this winter Idaho outing! This photograph has been published in conservation publications.
